Championing Heritage

‘How do you stop a 300 hundred year old building from falling down?’ ‘Why should we restore our high streets?’ ‘What is a Conservation Area?’ These are some of the questions being discussed by North Tottenham’s Heritage Champions.

The Champions are a 20 strong group of locals who, since September 2016, have been participating in a programme of events and workshops that celebrate our area’s rich built heritage. There have been sessions on architectural conservation, heritage writing and oral history interviewing techniques.

Over the course of a year, the group will learn about topics such as architectural conservation, oral history interviewing techniques, using historical archives and writing their own heritage trails. This will help them develop the skills to support and champion Tottenham’s heritage for years to come.

Conservation works on the first set of buildings are due to start in summer 2017, while the Heritage Champions will soon be participating in a session on conservation and planning enforcement, supported by Historic England (external link).
